Pipeline Velocity
The speed at which qualified leads move through your sales pipeline from first touch to closed deal.
What is Pipeline Velocity?
Pipeline velocity measures how fast revenue moves through your sales funnel. It combines four factors: number of qualified opportunities, average deal value, win rate, and sales cycle length.
Formula:
Pipeline Velocity = (Opportunities × Deal Value × Win Rate) / Sales Cycle Length
Why Pipeline Velocity Matters More Than Volume
A company with 100 leads per month and a 90-day sales cycle is not necessarily outperforming a company with 30 leads per month and a 30-day cycle. Velocity accounts for the full picture.
// VELOCITY DIAGNOSTIC
company_a: 100 leads × $50K × 10% win / 90 days = $5,555/day
company_b: 30 leads × $80K × 30% win / 45 days = $16,000/day
verdict: company_b generates 3x more daily revenue from fewer leads
How Outbound Affects Pipeline Velocity
Quality outbound accelerates pipeline velocity in three ways:
- Better qualification increases win rate (you are only meeting buyers who fit)
- Signal-based timing shortens sales cycles (you arrive when they are ready)
- Decision-maker access increases deal value (you negotiate with people who sign checks)
My system is designed to maximize velocity, not volume. My clients typically see 2-3x improvement in pipeline velocity within the first 60 days because the meetings I deliver are pre-qualified for budget and timeline.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is pipeline velocity?
- Pipeline velocity is the rate at which revenue moves through your sales pipeline - calculated as (number of qualified opportunities × win rate × average deal size) ÷ sales cycle length in days.
- How do you increase pipeline velocity?
- Pull one of four levers: add more qualified opportunities, raise win rate, raise average deal size, or shorten cycle length. Manual outbound to better-fit accounts moves all four at once.
- What's a good pipeline velocity number?
- There's no universal benchmark - it's a trend metric. Track it monthly and watch direction. A velocity that's flat or falling while headcount grows is a leading indicator of a quota miss.
